PaBreview – Day of the Tentacle Remastered

2 English

There are some games, that are too good to be played.

I've had some serious issues with Day of the Tentacle. 15 - 20 years ago I was playing the floppy version, later even the CD edition. It was unconditional love from the first sight. But I got stuck and I want to finish this game in a pure way - without any solutions. So I shelved it until I would be ready and imagined myself in the twilight of my life, with gray beard, a glass of booze - playing Day of the Tentacle.

But it was Tim Schafer, who decided I don't. He announced a remaster in 2014 and he accomplished it in 2016.

I showed no emotions. I tried to be neutral and indifferent. I did not buy it right after the release. Oh no no! I waited for a sale, I was indifferent, wasn't I ?

I bought the game eventually. But I didn't installed it. What if the remaster had been done wrong? Or the game was not that good as I remembered it? No, the stake was too high to risk.

And later on, some day at work I heard: "That DotT which you mentioned - it's really a lovely game!". And it started the avalanche.

TL;DR

The game cost about ~60 PLN (~16 $) on GOG. It is totally worth it. But I would recommend waiting for a sale. It can often be grabbed for half that price or even less. Humble Bundle sells it now for just 3 € which is not even a bargain, it is almost for free. If you can feed your kids, then you cannot spend that money wiser.

Let's elaborate.

Day of the Tentacle is a classic 90s' point and click adventure game originally released by LucasArts. We control three dudes (Laverne which happens to be female, Hoagie and Bernard), who have to save the world, because Purple Tentacle became evil. The plan is simple. Let's go back in time and stop Purple Tentacle yesterday. Of course it won't work. Laverne goes two hundred years to the future, Hoagie two hundred to the past and Bernard... Bernard stays where he is. I will stop here, because everything about the classic version has already been written elsewhere. For me it is just the best adventure game ever made.

Let's focus the remaster itself.

In the remastered version you got a full classic version as well. Old interface, old graphics, old feeling. But we are only one keystroke away from new edition. We can switch between them in runtime and the transition is smooth! Awesome!

New graphics is pretty. Everything is like in the original, just smooth, sharp, detailed and in hi-res. I cannot imagine that it could have been done better. It's the same about sounds.

The one and only thing I don't like is the modern interface. It just don't fit. But all the keyboard shortcuts work so it is not even needed. You can combine classic interface with modern version but it's another misfit.

So in the end I'd say that the game is still as charming as it was. Full of absurd humour, full of grotesque. Taking into account that we are older and more experienced, it is now even funnier and better. Feeling of the classic version is still in place and I have to admit - classic 320 x 240 pixel version, run on big modern displays is not looking that good as it was twenty years ago on a square 14" CRT display. The magic is still there, even in Full HD.
