How to disassemble Logitech UltraX Keyboard

I have bought this keyboard in 2004. 6 years ago. It’s working perfectly. It’s just perfect. Traditional layout (well, with M$ keys, but still). Wonderful, short and soft keys jump. It could have been quieter. It has an good old PS/2 interface. My keyboard is the first version of UltraX keyboard, which I think is the best.

As you probably know, a keyboard contains more food than a fridge do, and more bacteria than a toilet has. Sometimes breadcrumbs can block a key due to the way the keyboard is constructed. Shaking, tilting and key hitting usually solve the problem. But now, after 6 years of using this lovely keyboard, the grunge amount exceed its critical mass.

We flip over the keyboard and… WTF?
The construction is nuclear war resistant. You have to unscrew 14 (literally: fourteen) screws and fight against 12 (literally: twelve) latches! Ten screws marked with red circles are easy to remove. Another four, marked with red circles and up arrows, are hidden beneath rubber hole plugs. Latches are marked with yellow arrows. They are rather trouble-free – small flat screwdriver will do the trick (I suggest starting on the longer side). It’s not a bad idea to clean those rubber foots marked green.

The back panel is easy to remove after screws have been unscrewed. We gain access to the meat.

Here you have to remove two small screws marked red and latches marked yellow. Theoretically that’s all. Practically, you should remove electronic boards. To do that – unscrew ten screws marked green. Watch for the one that is located under the ribbon cable (the cable has to be bend).

Now, after twenty six screws we are done.

I don’t recommend further disassembling. To do that, you have to remove the keys – that’s lot of unnecessary work. To clean the space beneath and between keys, use a vacuum cleaner.

Assembling is very easy – just do everything in reverse order.
